"How do I get my makeup to last all day?"
This is a very common question I’m sure all makeup artists are asked. 😄 The good news is that there are several easy things you can do from home to help! I’m breaking down 5 ways to make makeup last all day as well as providing tried & true product suggestions.
Specializing in bridal & event makeup has allowed me to really push the efficacy of several products. On top of that, living in the South where it is hot and humid during most of the wedding season, I have to be sure my client’s faces don’t melt. 😆
So let’s dive in!
1. For starters, make sure you’re using good skin care and exfoliating.
Exfoliating will help:
- Slough away dead skin and encourage fresh cell turnover
- Clean & purify clogged pores
- Boosts circulation
- Helps skincare penetrate deeper
A good rule of thumb is to exfoliate twice a week. If you’re prone to redness or irritation, start out with once a week and work your way up to twice if you need it.
You can do chemical exfoliants such as glycolic or salicylic acids. Plant enzymes such as papaya, pomegranate or pineapple are also awesome natural exfoliators and good even for sensitive skin types.
If you use a physical exfoliant, don’t use exfoliant washes with hard granular particles. Those are usually too harsh. Instead, look for more gentle, natural ingredients that won’t damage the skin. For example, poppy seeds or jojoba beads.
Another best kept beauty secret is to do what’s called dermaplaning. It’s an exfoliant treatment that removes peach fuzz and dead skin with a tiny scrape scalpel. This is something that your esthetician can add on to most services. But there is a little tool you can use on yourself at home!!! While these little razors are not the real deal, it’s an awesome way to keep up your healthy, glowing, peach fuzz-free skin from home.
Once you start, you’ll never go back- and no, not because your hair comes in thicker or darker – it doesn’t! But because you’ll realize how amazing your makeup and skincare goes on and feels when you don’t have that buildup of dead skin and fuzz!
2. A huge player in the longevity of your makeup is a primer.
There are so many options for primers these days, including ones for balancing redness, oil control, hydration, glow, etc. So you might ask… “Are primers really necessary??” This is probably one of the most overlooked steps in makeup application and in short…. Yes!!
Primers are meant to prep your skin for a smooth makeup application as well as grip the makeup for long lasting wear. I’ve included tried & true product suggestions below.

3. Set your foundation & concealer with a translucent setting powder.
Here are two setting powders you can’t go wrong with.
4. Use a Setting Spray as the FINAL step, especially on extra long or hot days.
These are my go-to setting sprays.
5. And Lastly.... Don't touch your face!
Try your best to avoid touching your face throughout the day. Not only can it spread dirt, oil and bacteria from your hands to your face, it breaks down the makeup you’ve worked so hard to apply.
Wrap Up
There you go beauties!! Following these tips will help your makeup last all day and all night with minimal touchups necessary. 🙌🏻 Now you’re ready to face the day with confidence!
